The current through the external circuit will be extremely low as the electrical resistance of the meter is so high. In this situation, the only external device across the anode and cathode is a voltmeter or digital multimeter (DMM) used to meassure the cell potential difference (the voltage, or emf). This is by far the most popular type for students to investigate as it is much easier to control the variables. This is where the cell is not being discharged (that is, not connected up to an external device such as a light bulb, resistor, motor etc). The resistance in the cell is now very important and the reading on the meter will be lower than for an open circuit.ġ. Only a miniscule current flows to the voltmeter but quite a large current flows through the load. In a closed circuit cell there is a load between the electrodes in addition to the voltmeter. Student experiments are usually of this type. Any resistance in the cell has no effect on the voltmeter reading. The meter takes a miniscule (almost unmeasurable) current from the cell. In an open circuit cell the only device connected between the electrodes is a voltmeter. When investigating galvanic cells there are two approaches that can be taken: open circuit, or closed circuit. Note that galvanic cells are also referred to as 'voltaic' or 'electrochemical' cells.
